I get asked a lot of questions about a range of subjects, some of which I’ve tried to answer in this section. If I’ve omitted your question, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Have you ever done this type of writing before?
Not a single writer exists who has written exhaustively on every conceivable subject. When a product or service is highly technical or simply unfamiliar, what’s important is that a writer understands what he needs to understand about it and is able to describe the benefits in a clear, concise way. Frankly, much depends on the quality of the background material provided, so the better source material you provide, the better job I can do. I’ve written compellingly on a wide variety of subjects, from basic vanilla mutual funds to highly esoteric drug manufacturing facilities, computer networks and energy plants. One more thing: if I don’t feel comfortable with the subject, I won’t take the assignment.

How long will it take you to complete my project?
That depends on the assignment. Generally speaking, direct-mail letters or brochures that require one or two interviews can be done in few days. More complex assignments that require in-depth research and interviews may take two weeks or more. In general, however, I can say that I turn most things around in less time than do other writers. One thing is for sure: it will be in your hands when we agreed that it would.

How do you charge?
On a per project basis. My rates are probably somewhat less than those of most other writers in my geographic area. Frankly, I think that’s because I turn assignments around more quickly than they do. And, most of my projects require little if any rewriting which means they require less of my time. While I’d be disingenuous if I tried to be more specific than that here (remember, I’m not selling lawn furniture or VCRs so I don’t have a factory price sheet) you should know that my fees will depend on the size and complexity of the project. I will give you a firm number when you call for an estimate. And when I say firm I mean firm. In addition, my fee includes all meetings, research, interviews, and three rewrites of the original draft, but does not include changes in copy direction or project scope after work on the project has begun.

What are your payment terms?
For new clients, I request a fifty-percent (50%) retainer to be paid within seven business days after agreement to begin an assignment. The balance is billed at net 30 days upon delivery of final approved copy. Of course, for repeat clients, I can be more lenient and will often complete a rush assignment without having received any up-front payment at all.

Can you hook with me up with any design firms?
Absolutely. Remember, I’m just the word guy, not the design guy. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with many design firms and have developed a good sense of who can do what and who can’t. Whatever your needs are--brochures, an annual report, a new-media flash presentation, a web site--I can locate the right firm to get it done. So, if you need writing and design, look no further.

You’re in the New York area, but I’m not. Is that a problem?
Not at all. I’ve worked with clients over the years who are located quite far away. That’s why they invented fax machines, email and, when absolutely critical, overnight courier services.

Your client feedback looks impressive, but how do I really know you’ll deliver the goods?
Talking to my clients is the best way I know. I’ll be delighted to supply you with names and phone numbers of a representative handful of clients, both end-clients and agencies. Please call them to find out whether I’ve delivered what I’ve promised. Beyond that, all I can say is to try me. You WILL like me.

What’s the best way to get started?
Give me a call at (914) 381-4879
, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, EST. I’ll be happy to spend a few minutes with you over the phone while you explain the nature of your project. Then I’ll get back to you with an exact price or a tight price range, if there are variables that are unknown at the outset of the project. If you prefer, you can e-mail me with details of the project and I will get back to you with an estimate.
